Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that about 20 to 30 per cent of people in the Netherlands suffer from regularly. It describes a number of complaints around the sleep pattern such as:

Getting enough sleep is very important for our health. Those who regularly sleep six hours or less per night have an increased risk of health complaints such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic diseases, gastrointestinal problems, disruption of the hormone balance and a less well-functioning immune system.

Insomnia can be acute or chronic. Acute insomnia is often related to (temporary) stress or pain. This usually resolves by itself. We speak of chronic insomnia when it persists for longer than three months and occurs several times a week. This can be due to a number of causes such as:
